Unboxing: Aldnoah Zero – Season 1 (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray) [UK]

Anime Limited’s latest Collectors Edition Blu-ray release is non-other than Aldnoah Zero – Season 1; a futurisc mecha styled anime series that, from the outside at least, looks quite interesting; and today we will be taking a closer look at the outer-packaging and it’s contents.

When Anime Limited initally announced Aldnoah Zero – Season 1 it was going to be released into two half-season sets, which is exactly how it was released in Australia and America; however for whatever reason the release was postponed slightly and as such this Collectors Edition complete series release was born. Of course I am greatly for this decision as it means we have everything packaged together inside on box; and boy it is a nice box. The outer packaging uses the same styled chipboard artbox we have all become familiar with, especially if you import FUNimation releases, and while the packaging may be simplistic – such as the singular character artwork that oddly enough also has someone elses arm in the image – it goes well with the overall product.

Once inside we are treated to two singular character designs on both sides of the digipack box; both of which were used in the Australian Blu-ray release of Aldnoah Zero – Season 1 Part 1. The inside of the digipack however is one a notable change can be seen; as opposed to traditional ‘push button’ disc holders we have clip disc holders. It’s potentially hard to describe (so I suggest watching the video) but the discs basically clip into place. It’s a unique disc choice and while it may protect the discs better during transit it can lead to the discs becoming damaged if you are unsure on how to get them out. The discs themselves, just like other elements of the product, are pretty simplistic but they follow suite of the original design from America, Australian – and I assume – Japanese releases of the show.

Of course as this is a Collectors Edition release we also have a booklet included. The booketl, which is landscape rather than portrait, features a variety of different artwork, concept designs and sketches from the series (so some spoilers may be seen) and does well to provide a nice collectors edition feel. Of course it’s nothing as grand as Universal Pictures book that was included with Seraph of the End – Season 1 Part 1, but it is still a nice book and neatly presented alongside the blu-ray discs themselves.

Overall this Aldnoah Zero – Season 1 Collector’s Edition Blu-ray release is everything I expected to receive and has a strong-build quality feel to it; my only gripe however is the new disc holder system that they have in place as it is completely different to anything we have ever experienced. Aldnoah Zero – Season 1 will be available on Collector’s Edition Blu-ray and Standard Edition DVD from the 27th June 2016.
