In some rather unexpected, but absolutely amazing, news UK anime distributor Anime Limited have announced that they will release Hayao Miyazaki’s 1978 TV series Future Boy Conan, otherwise known as Conan: The Boy in Future, on Blu-ray and 4K Blu-Ray in the UK.
Future Boy Conan is a twenty-six episode anime series that was adapted from Alexander Key’s 1970 novel, The Incredible Tide, with the series itself being broadcast on Japanese TV in 1978. The release of Future Boy Conan also saw Hayao Miyazaki make his directorial debut.
Synopsis: Twenty years ago, a terrible war fought with magnetic weapons caused the earth’s axis to tilt, and earthquakes and tidal waves destroyed civilization. Conan is born into this new world, raised by his adopted grandfather on an isolated island. But his life is forever changed when a mysterious girl named Lana washes ashore, pursued by shadowy operatives who seek to use her in a new scheme to control what’s left of the world.
As announced Anime Limited will release Future Boy Conan on Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray with the series being split into two half-season collectors sets. Each set will contain 13 episodes with these presented on both Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-Ray discs. The second set will also contain a 132-page book written by Jonathan Clements and Andrew Osmond that chronicles the history and production of the Miyazaki’s directorial debut as well as provides useful insights into the series.
The release of Future Boy Conan is expected for 2022 with further details to be announced in the future. In the meantime the release of Future Boy Conan is not only an exciting piece of news, as previously it has only been available physically in Japan, but it is the first animated TV Series to receive a 4K Blu-Ray release.
