Tezuka’s “Barbara” Now Available on Blu-Ray in the UK via Third Window Films

It’s not often that we cover Japanese live-action-films on this site (maybe we should?), but the recent UK Blu-Ray release of Tezuka’s Barbara is definitely worth mentioning. Released on the 28th June 2021 in the UK Barbara is a feature length film directed by Macoto Tezka, the son of Osamu Tezuka, that is a live-action-adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s erotic manga of the same name.

Originally serialized as a follow-up to Ayako (1972-73) in Big Comic from July 1973 to May 1974, and recently published in English, French, German and Spanish, Barbara adult-orientated fantasy tale filled with love and occultc themes and is a story deals with the erotic and bizarre experiences of a famous novelist called Yosuke Mikura whose life is tossed upside down by a mysterious girl named “Barbara”. This feature-length live-action adaptation of the manga has been brought to life by Christopher Doyle and it’s said that this controversial story, dealing with various taboos such as forbidden love, mystery, art, Eros, scandal and occultism, was said to have been impossible to be cinematized at the time of its original manga publication.

Synopsis:

Famous novelist Yosuke Mikura encounters a young girl in the subway station and brings her home to his condominium. The girl’s name is Barbara. For all her bad manners and constant state of drunkenness, she has a certain charm that is hard to put your finger on. Much like a stray cat claiming her territory, Barbara settles herself into Mikura’s apartment. This propels the creatively congested Mikura to write again. His life takes a drastic turn for the better. Is Barbara a muse? An artist’s savior? Or is she a spell-casting sorcerer?

This Blu-Ray and DVD Double Pack of Barbara features the film in Japanese with English subtitles, but is also presented with a selection of bonus materials such as behind the scenes interviews and deleted scenes.
