Manga UK and FUNimation To Offer Replacement AKIRA 4K HDR Discs

Shortly after the release of AKIRA 4K Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray in the UK (via Manga Entertainment) and in the US (via FUNimation) it was discovered that the discs were only SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) as opposed to HDR (High Dynamic Range) like the original Japanese release.

Since then early adaptors have been disappointed, but now FUNimation Global Group, which consists of both Manga (UK) and FUNimation (US), have acknowledged the problem and have announced plans to offer a disc replacement scheme.

The highly anticipated AKIRA 4K, featuring the film in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) is out now, and we know some of you want to experience the film in the highest-quality format possible.

Beginning in February 2021, an HDR (High Dynamic Range) version of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray of AKIRA will be available. Funimation is committed to making sure that this historic film matches the artistry in which Otomo-san intended, as well as in the format you want to enjoy it in.

We know this might cause some headaches, but bear with us as we make sure you get the latest version of the release at no additional cost.

To request a replacement AKIRA 4K HDR Disc then please follow the instructions.:

UK & Ireland Instructions:

  • E-Mail akira4kreplacementUK@funimation.com with “AKIRA 4K” as the subject header
  • In the E-mail you will be required to provide your name, mailing address, email address and proof of purchase (receipt or confirmation email and photo of the disc).

US & Canada Instructions:

  • E-mail to akira4kreplacement@funimation.com with “AKIRA 4K” as the subject header
  • In the E-mail you will be required to provide your name, mailing address, email address and proof of purchase (receipt or confirmation email and photo of the disc).

Note: Those unable to provide proof of purchase will be able to send their current AKIRA 4K Disc to MangaUK / FUNimation with a returns authorisation number. Once received a replacement disc will be sent, however it is much easier (and quicker) for proof of purchase to be shown.

The replacement scheme is currently only offered to UK and Ireland (for Manga UK release) and US and Canada (for the FUNimation release), both of which use the same disc masters – which is why this lack of HDR functionality is only apparent in the UK and US releases of the film. It’s not currently known is the companies will recall stock of AKIRA 4K, but at least they are offering replacements and resolving the issue so that fans can enjoy the film at its best.
