FUNimation To Be Acquired by Sony Pictures TV

In rather interesting news US Anime Distributor and dubbing production house FUNimation, otherwise known as FUNimation Entertainment, have today announced that they will be acquired by Sony Pictures TV with Sony purchasing a majority stake in the company.

The deal, which is said to value FUNimation at approximately $150 million, will see Gen Fukunaga, CEO of FUNimation, retain a minority stake in the business as well as staying on as CEO of the Company. The operation of the business, which ranges from Home Video Distribution, Dubbing Production, Simulcast Streaming and Streaming service through FUNimationNOW will remain unchanged and this will also be the same for staff within the company.

The potential goal, as explained by Andy Kaplan, President of Worldwide Networks at Sony Pictures Television, is to expand the the range of anime that Sony can deliver to its auidiences across the globe:

“Around the world, Sony’s networks have been major players in the anime space for nearly two decades, and in more recent years we have rapidly increased our networks’ over-the-top and digital offerings to consumers. With the acquisition of Funimation, the combined IP of ANIMAX, KIDS STATION and Funimation allows us to deliver the best anime to fans across all screens and platforms”

This, as CEO Gen Fukunaga added, also allows FUNimation access to additional creative pipelines within Japan:

“With Funimation’s long-established leadership position in anime and Sony’s direct access to the creative pipeline in Japan, it will be a great partnership to take Funimation to the next level.”

Since forming in 2011 FUNimation have continued to expand and grow, and in more recent times begun releasing titles within the UK through the help of All The Anime and Universal Pictures; so it will be interesting to see where this new partnership with Sony Pictures TV will take them. FOr the time being at least things will stay the same, both in America and the UK; so we can all continue to enjoy anime from the company.
