DVD Review: Yu-Gi-Oh! GX – Season 3

Manga Entertainment UK continues their trend of nostalgia with their final ‘English Dubbed’ DVD instalment of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX – Season 3; but does it still provide that fast-paced-dueling-action we have become familiar? Well let’s find out.

Jaden and his friends are officially upperclassman as they enter their third year at Duel Academy, the world’s most prestigious dueling prep school! To keep students at the top of their game, Chancellor Sheppard invites the infamous – and often feared – Professor Thelonious Viper to campus this year.

Known for his strict and unconventional teaching methods, Viper forces Jaden and his friends to take part in a series of dangerous “Survival Duels” in which more is at risk than just their grades! New rivals, new monsters and a whole new season to Get Your Game On!

Our View:

A third season of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX means a third school year for Jaden Yuki and his friends at duelist academy; but alas this isn’t any ordinary school. The arrival of new characters, new rivals and a new enemy threat means that our group of budding duelists are going to have their hands, and decks, busy for the entire school year – and this is just the start of it.

Starting a fresh once again the third season of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX begins with a slight change of pace as Jaden Yuki begins to think about past duels and events that led him to where he is today. But as this journey of self-discovery goes on four new transfer students, and a brand new professor in the form of Thelonius Viper, arrive at the academy – much to the interest of onlookers and our main group of duelists.

As you’d expect Jaden and friends are eager to test their strength; much to the delight of Thelonius who plans to use these duels in order to learn more about Jaden Yuki in secret, and as such a wide selection of episodes focus on Thelonius ‘secret’ tests with Jaden and his friends – each of which pushing their dueling skills to the limit. As you would hope it would be every episode in this third season release is a new duel with new monsters, combinations and animations being used to display the range of characters and their skills.

Of course this is not the only talking point of the third season of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX; as the arrival of a new enemy threat, in the form of The Supreme King, pushes Jaden and newcomer Jesse (who also can see and hear duel spirits) to team up in order to protect earth and the entire dimension of duelist monsters. Its action-packed-duels all the way with and it’s good fun to watch in long binge sessions for any Yu-Gi-Oh! fan.

Sadly just like with the previous Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s DVD releases there are no bonus features included; which is a shame but to be expected.

Instead, as shown above, all fans are treated to is a rather static DVD Menu which lists all included episodes with an instrumental of the opening song.

The third season of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX starts completely afresh from prior releases with slightly improved animation quality, a rock-steady cast of English voice actors and a new selection of characters to further expand the story that we have previously become acustomed to.

For the most part this particular season of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX focuses on the duels, with a secret agenda in the background; that is until the new enemy threat occurs which results in all of the main group of characters – and the newcomers – to team up to put a stop to it.

In regards to this DVD release by Manga Entertainment UK then it is business as usual with chapter markings being in off places and NTSC video format throughout. Furthermore, as per the previous releases, this the English Dub only version – with the English Dub produced by 4KIDS Entertainment – so some edits and monster changes are expected when compared to the original Japanese release of the series. Basically it is the same presentation and style as that of the previous season; except with a new batch of episodes that are more engaging than before.

If you’ve been enjoying Yu-Gi-Oh! GX so far than this third season release is another worthwhile addition to your collection; but sadly it will be the last set you add to your Yu-Gi-Oh! GX collection – but as they say all good things must come to an end.

Score: review-stars-3
