Sonic Mania Release Date Confirmed for PC, Switch, XB1 & PS4

Obviously Sonic Mania is not a Japanese anime related title, and realistically it shouldn’t have a ‘news piece’ on this site; but considering that SEGA are returning to Sonic the Hedgehog’s roots, by releasing a 2D game inspired by the original SEGA MegaDrive/Genesis trilogy, and that this new release date trailer features anime styled cut-scenes inspired from Sonic the Hedgehog OVA and Sonic CD it’s worth talking about.

Available from the 15th August 2017 as a digital download, as well as a Collector’s Edition bundle exclusively from Amazon, Sonic Mania will see Sonic, Tails and Knuckles once again team-up to defeat the evil Dr Eggman (aka Dr Robotnik) from trying to take over the world by using Flickies as his minions. It’s the age-old style of gameplay, something which SEGA tried to replicate with Sonic the Hedgehog 4, but alas Sonic Mania will act as the ‘true sequel’ to the SEGA Mega Drive titles as illustrated towards the end of the Sonic Mania Release date trailer.

That’s right; the release date trailer features ‘animated’ scenes that resemble the Sonic the Hedgehog OVA film released all those years ago and – as viewers may notice – the elevator button that Sonic pushes features buttons for different levels; each representing a different SEGA MegaDrive game.

Cameo references and throwbacks aside Sonic Mania will be available exclusively as a digital download from the 15th August 2017. A Collector’s Edition, which will contain a statue of Sonic, a gold ring and a code for the game presented in a collectors box.
