The European Division of Marvelous games have today announced that they will be releasing Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star, which is an action adventure styled game set within the Fate Universe, onto the PS4 and PS Vita later this year.
Developed by Marvelous, and published within Europe by Marvelous Europe, Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star is a hack-and-slash action title with visual novel elements that will take place shortly after the events of Fate/EXTRA; a game which was previously released onto the PSP – and is available to download from the Playstation Network Store. Additionally unlike previous instalments into the Fate Universe this game will see heroic spirits and servants from various different universes, such as Fate/stay night, Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Grand Order, appear for battle.
Developed by Marvelous Inc, Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star takes place after the latest iteration of the franchise’s recurring battle royale, the Holy Grail War, where ‘Servants’ – ancient warriors of myth and legend – fight to reign supreme. The events of this title follow those of Fate/EXTRA, in which the world of SE.RA.PH is controlled by the all-powerful lunar super-computer known as the Moon Cell Automaton. In the digital realm of SE.RA.PH, the Holy Grail War is over, but the land’s new ruler faces challenges and threats from all sides. Those Servants who survived the war now find themselves drawing up tense and unlikely alliances, preparing for a conflict that may tear SE.RA.PH apart…or destroy it entirely.
In Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star players will follow the narrative from the independent perspectives of three Servants, facing off against foes from all over the Fate franchise. Characters from Fate/stay night, Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Grand Order appear, populating SE.RA.PH with familiar and new faces alike. In true genre fashion, combat is fast, hectic and powerful, with diverse skillsets and varying playstyles spanning several Fate ‘classes.’ With breathtaking Noble Phantasm attacks and astounding Servant transformations, the Fate franchise has never looked better
It’s also worth mentioning that Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star isn’t just a way for Japanese companies to ‘extend’ the franchise; as the game has been developed with scenario writer Nasu Kinoko, original creator Takashi Takeuchi & character designer Arco Wada as well as in conjunction with TYPE-MOON for a truly unique soundtrack.
What’s more important is that Japanese voice actors such as Sakura Tange (Nero Claudius in Fate/Grand Order), Mamiko Noto (Saber in Fate/Grand Order), Ayako Kawasumi (Saber in Fate/Stay Night), Rumi Okubo (Lancer in Fate/Grand Order) and Maaya Sakamoto (Shiki in Fate/EXTRA) will also return to the franchise to provide voices to notable characters within the fate universe.
Marvelous Europe will release Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star onto the PS4 and PS Vita, in both digital and retail forms, later this year although at the moment an official release date – other than Winter 2016 – has yet to be announced. In the meantime however you can check out the official announcement trailer below.
