It may have been out for awhile but seeing as a UK release ‘still’ hasn’t been announced i’ve decided to take a dip and unboxing the US Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack release of Aquarion Evol – Part 1. For starters both the DVD and Blu-ray Discs are REGION LOCKED, and as such will not work a UK player; so in order to play them you’ll need either an American player or a mutli-regional device. With that out of the way lets take a closer look.
As with all FUNimation releases the carded sleeve that goes over the blu-ray case is exactly the same artwork, and while the artwork is pretty nice the text is insanely small. It’s not like we are going to read it countless times but it would be nice to easily distingquish Part 1 and Part 2 without checking the cover-art (as the cover-art is usually different). Ultimately the biggest disappointment, for me at least, was the artwork design used on the discs; sure they look great (by having an idividual character artwork per disc) but with FUNimation opting for this ‘newer disc design’ as opposed to full colour artwork it makes it difficult to distinquish between DVD and Blu-ray – unless you look really closerly.
What we have them is a set that looks ‘really good’ on the outside and ‘pretty cool’ on the inside, but when it comes to figuring out what set and what disc it is then it can become troublesome; plus with the discs having so much silver (clear) space its going to become a fingerprint magnet after a short period of time. Of course the ‘real’ attention is the disc content, and as such we are treated to 13 episodes and a variety of bonus content – all of which is presented in High Definition and Standard Definition (depending on whether you are watching the Blu-ray or DVD).
I’ve never watched Aquarion Evol so it’s going to be an interesting viewing experience, but in the meantime this Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack of Aquarion Evol – Part 1 is now available within America.
