It’s a series that many anime fans have been wanting MVM Entertainment to release on Blu-ray for a while and here it finally is; the Complete Series Collection of Bodacious Space Pirates on Blu-ray and today we are going to unboxing it. Originally released on DVD last year, and then later re-released as a complete series set on both DVD and Blu-ray last week, this Blu-ray release of Bodacious Space Pirates contains the entire season (25 episodes) across four blu-ray discs in both English and Japanese audio languages in High Definition.

Ok; so thats the “good news” out of the way, the bad news is that this release is pretty flawed – for starters the overall packaging design is pretty pathetic (two logos for the series on the front cover?) and this ‘basicness’ is then carried onto the spine and ultimately the back cover. It’s a reminder of the releases MVM Entertainment used to publish until people complained about how bad they were. It’s not just the cover that’s pretty basic either, as the disc artwork is also rather bland, however Disc 3 and 4 have a ‘space-feel’ to them with the discs being black.

Overall the packaging (and disc artwork) is nothing to be ‘impressed’ with; fortunately the main reason anyone would purchase this set is the High Definition quality, well even that has flaws. MVM Entertainment have opted to use the ‘original’ Blu-ray masters from Hanabee Entertainment (the australian distributor) and as a result the episodes are in 1080i as opposed to Sentai’s recent boxset released which is in 1080p. What this means is that we receive an ‘inferior’ product in visual quality, whereby banding and other visual errors (like a PAL to NTSC conversion) may be present – furthermore the discs themselves are not fully compatible with Samsung Blu-ray players as upon watching the firts episode the picture broke-up.

Overall this Blu-ray release by MVM Entertainment is pretty much flawed from straight to finish; the packaging design (although similar to the recent Sentai Filmworks boxset release) is terrible and the picture quality issues are disappointing. Of course however if you are a fan (and these flaws don’t bother you) then this release is ideal for you.

Bodacious Space Pirates – The Complete Series is now available on Blu-ray and DVD within the UK.

Hi, i was considering purchasing MVM version of Bodacious Space Pirates on BD but i was wondering whether or not the newest Sentai release of the series is region free? It would seem the better bet since the picture quality will undoubtedly be much better
