Unboxing: Shakugan no Shana – Season 1 (Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack) [USA]

FUNimation’s release of Shakugan no Shana – Season 1 is an interesting one, as i’ve been told that the Blu-ray release was upscaled by the original japanese film company and then passed on to FUNimation for this american release, however since it was Remastered into HD at the source its considered a HD Native film instead of a HD Upscale, depsite that though the overall picture quality (of the show) is extremely good, though some seems, especially the opening, seem abit blurred or washed out.

The Boxart, for me, is slightly disappointing as carded sleeve (DVD size) which slips over the Blu-ray sized case has different styled logos, pictures and artwork, where as usually its all the same. While both the front covers (of the Blu-ray case and carded sleeve) are the same, the back cover(s) have slightly different images of the show, additionally the side of the blu-ray case is different to the side of the DVD sleeve, its like two people have done the artwork and it does not flow naturally.

The Disc artwork is another issue, the style that has been used makes them hard to see what ‘artwork’ is being used or what is actually written on the disc, the only plus side is that the Red Disc’s indicate a DVD, where as the Black Disc’s indicate a Blu-ray – thus making it easier to find the disc ‘format’ you want when your in a hurry.

The FUNimation release Shakugan no Shana – Season 1 features 24 episodes over 4 DVD Discs and 3 Blu-ray discs, both of which are Region Locked and can not be played on a standard UK DVD/Blu-ray player. Unlike other anime releases Shana Season 1 has a variety of Special Features included on the disc(s), such as Naze Nani Shana (Episodes 1 – 8), Sana-tan (Episodes 1 & 2), Textless songs and trailers for other FUNimation shows.

If you are interested ion Shakugan no Shana – Season 1, then it is currently available to buy as a DVD Boxset in the UK via MVM Entertainment UK and it features the same content. However if you are interested in the Blu-ray then you would have to import this set.

  1. Thoughts says:

This is my first time seeing this series, and I am really enjoying it, but the Bluray is easily the worst I have ever seen. The DVD for Shana looks so much better upscaled on my BD player, and I have no idea what JC Staff did with the original source to make it look this bad. (Granted they don’t exactly have the best BD track record anyway). Loss of detail is also noticeable on the BD.

Personally I think that Funi themselves could probably have done a better job, look at the second Samurai Champloo BD release for example.

I don’t own the original Geneon/Funi or MVM releases to compare this to, but if the DVDs are the same as the ones included in this set, then I would advise against ‘upgrading’.
