Demonstration: Play Needless Part 1 & Part 2 on a UK Blu-ray Player

While Needless Part 1 and Needless Part 2 maybe listed as REGION LOCKED, it is still possible to play these Blu-ray Discs on a UK Blu-ray Player.

In order to play these discs on a UK Blu-ray Plaer the user must press the ‘Disc Menu’ or ‘Title Menu’ button on their Blu-ray Players remote control during the ‘Wrong Region Code’ error screen. In doing so this will then bypass the ‘Wrong Region Code’ error screen and go straight to the main menu, allowing the user to watch the Blu-ray as originally intended.

So far i’ve only come across this one release that does it, however its worth noting and trying with future releases.

Here is a step by step process on how to play the disc(s) on your UK Blu-ray Player

1: Insert the Blu-ray disc into your Blu-ray Player / Drive / Playstation 3
2: Once the ‘This Disc is not compatible with your Player (Wrong Region Code Screen)’ press the ‘Disc Menu’ or ‘Title Menu’ button on your remote control
3: After a few seconds of loading, the Main menu will appear

This has been confirmed working on a PC, Playstation 3 and three different Samsung Blu-ray Players – once the wrong region code screen appears you must press the button to access the disc menu, if the button isn’t pressed within 20 seconds the disc will be ejected.

If your still a bit confused i made a demonstration video, which you can see below:

do you have clannad to test as Id be very interesed in seeing if that or any other sentai titles would work, also on the ps3 do you need a remote or can you just use the dualshock

    • Scott says:

Currently do not have Clannad (or any other Sentai Filmworks Releases) to test at the moment. Yes you should be able to do it via the PS3 Controller – Just press Triangle button then highlight Disc Menu and Press X.

    • Hi says:

With Clannad and newer sentai titles (Starting with Angel Beats?), this method does NOT work, i don’t know if there is a work around for BD Players, but what you can do with a PS3 though is when the region lock menu comes up, press Triangle and select the ‘Go to’ option. Then select ‘title’, and for disc 1 go to title 4, for other discs the episodes start at title 3. You can use the pop-up menu to go between episodes by pressing Square, but you cannot go to the title menu or the region lock menu comes up. I have discs such as TWGoK, Clannad and K-On!! Part 1 and thankfully it works as it is pretty much the only way to get good Bluray anime over here, especially as someone who does not buy DVDs.

Tempting but very dangerous, Clannad After story is 60 dollars without shipping if it doesn’t work I’m seriously screwed..

  3. Claymore says:

Does anyone know if this works on a BD player that’s not a PS3 with Ghost Hound?

    • Hi says:

OK, right, same guy here who posted the PS3 method. I got a Toshiba BDX3200 today and before making it region free i tried the same method and it works. You CAN play Sentai BDs on a Region B bluray player. For me i had to press the Search button then go to Title and change it to 4 to start playing disc 1, or 3 for discs 2/3. The latest disc i have is Clannad after story and that works.

      • Hi says:

For anyone interested the Sentai discs I have tried are:
        Angel Beats
        Clannad After Story
        Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works
        Infinite Stratos
        K-On!! part 1
        The World God Only Knows

        And they all work.

      • Claymore says:

I tried it with Ghost Hound on my BDX1200, the region incompatibility screen only stays up for a second or two so it’s not long enough to search the disc =n= Do you know if the model of BD player can affect how long the region incompatibility screen stays up or is it just because Ghost Hound was an older release or they were more cautious with that particular title? On the plus side, the quality of the DVDs (or at least the first one, haven’t tested the others) is miles better than the other releases I have from them (Hidamari Sketch Season 1 and Allison and Lillia Part 1). Maybe they make more of an effort when it’s not a DVD only title?

      • Claymore says:

I tried pressing the top menu button repeatedly when I was loading the Ghost Hound BD and this worked to get the menus and episodes to play, I haven’t tried any other Sentai BDs out, but I hope this helps.

  4. Claymore says:

Further clarification: all disc content I attempted to access via the menus after pressing the top menu button played without problems, but I can’t remember if I tried to play absolutely everything on the discs.
